Nest security product category was developed in 2015 and launched in 2016. This was the first smart home security product that customers could install on their own without professional installation. I was responsible for the design and development of this system. In this role I collaborated with cross functional teams that included engineering, UX/UI/ design and marketing. This was a fast pace project with high intensity of user testing and multiple rounds of production tooling
Key tag feature is just one small part of the security system ecosystem but very important when multiple users need access
NEST base hub is the brain of home security. It combines multiple functions such as WIFI hub, security keypad and RIF identification. It serves as interface to arm or disarm home security quickly if phone app is not available
Door and window security interface is the hardest part to incorporate. This product keeps track of opened - closed doors and windows at all times. Magnetic contact has to be designed and calibrated perfectly not just with software but hardware.
Process of development included multiple prototypes that validated tooling feasibility, fit and finish, CMF and UXR. Customer experience of unboxing and activating was our main focus when going through this phase
Camera module design had to be a premium product as it competed with other brands in the smart home category. We needed to find a way to create that experience with premium functional features, CMF and very simple, elegant design.
We created proof of concept prototypes to test functionality of this idea and later created full production parts in collaboration with PD team
